Soaring copper prices impact manufacturing in auto sector |

On June 14, a U.S. auto parts manufacturer sends out a press release on the effect of commo-dity
prices on its products (many manufacturers don’t comment on commodity pricing). A week later, on June
21, police investigate a break-in at a Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS) substation in Rutland, Vt. One day
after that and 800 miles to the east, workers alert British police to a Croydon mortuary whose roof has been
stolen. Normally, such disparate events would be tied together in a work of fiction, but these three events are
bound by two real-world factors. They all involve copper. Together they provide an exercise in how manufacturers
